Cinderblock - demo 2015

I don't know a fucking thing about Cinderblock, except they are total ass-kicking. This demo contains five punk dynamites. First track - "Blood on my boots" - could easily picked for a street fight or kicking some nazi ass. It's my personal favourite, but "disco killers" (!!!) and "Disarm" are equally energetic. The band have a fresh "second generation" great britain punk sound somewhere between early Chaos Uk, the Varukers, Blitz but also reminding me the bostonians The Profits. Hope, they will release this demo as an ep and hope they'll release a proper full lenght in the future. Ripping '82 punk.

Replica - Self titled 7''

We've talked about Replica once in the past, when they released their first demo. What chganged since then? Not so much i guess, except that Replica still is a fucking rager. This is their first 7'' released this year from Prank records and Cut the chord that...records. Here we have 5 songs of pure old-school pissed-off, fast and tight hardcore perfectness. the band re-recorded my personal fav "you can't stop the weather" giving it more boost, plus the song "big black boots" got the great dual vocals that i really love. 5 songs in 6 mins and 40 seconds, this is a hardcore shot, drink responsibly. A great release and i'm expecting more great stuff from a trully great band. Check also the live video at the bottom. Cheers...

Deadly Reign - Slave 7''

Deadly Reign have released the best album of 2001 under the name "No end in sight". Now, two years later they come in the same deadly style. Tight and furious hardcore punk. "Slave" released through Profane existence records and contains three scissor cutting tracks for all the fans of non-boring D-Beat madness. They have members of World burns to death, Scarred for life and Till death. I've said before that "who are we shooting at?" may be my favourite track from Deadly Reign but "Employment of slaves" is a big contender. An ace seveninch worth to checking out.

Criaturas - Espiritu de libertad

Not so much to say, Criaturas comes from austin, texas and they have already released two 7'' and a full-lenght. As a huge fan of the latino hardcore punk scene i couldn't have my hands on it. For those you are familiar with Desconocidos (whose members are involved here too) you know what to except. Criaturas i think is a more speed up version in the usual latin punk style. The self titled track is tha fucking anthem. This album is one of the contenders for the album of the year, guys. This is the spirit of liberation...

Criminal Damage - Call of death

You got back from your vacations. You've been there for a week at most. You feel nostalgia and anger when you look at the concrete in the front of your door. You wish to had the guts to talk to talk to that girl on the beach. Monday morning your boss will have the look "you-got-vacations-now-back-to-work" and you'll wanna smack him. Ok, spin the new Criminal Damage record and try a walk, man. Winter is not coming yet. Criminal Damage is the "the most anticipating album" band and their third lp is out already after such a long time. I still prefer their first album but you know what you'll get. Amazing english punk ala BLITZ with dual vocals and steady rhythms, poppy and happy tunes with dark and tough lyrics. Songs like "the storm" or "anxiety" are instant hits and i think you'll have the album spinning again again. Well done mr. Burdette and the rest of the Criminal Damagers.

Out Cold - A Heated Display

As i promised, this is the new Out Cold album, released some months ago on a cd format and it's scheduled to be released on a lp in some months. I'm not going to start explain the importance of Out Cold, lyrically and musically, for the hardcore "scene" or how different they sound in this album, cause they don't. If you're interested you can read some previous reviews HERE. All tracks have been recorded somewhere in 2005 after "Goodbye cruel world" release except the vocals. The vocals recording done in 2012 from Kevin Mertens (band's first singer). Still i don't know if i can like the voice of Kevin Mertens who sings here, seems that Mark's voice is and always be tremendous and attacking and cannot be compared. Now, some tips about the album as John (drummer) write it down on Out Cold's page (the whole column can be found here):

"In 2005, shortly after the release of the "Goodbye Cruel World" album and the "Planned Accidents" EP, Mark & I went through an unprecedented writing spurt. Over the course of just a few months we had written the music for 28 songs, enough for two albums. In December of that year, the two of us went into the studio and laid down the guitar and drum tracks for all 28 songs in just two days. Wanting to achieve a higher level of production than on our previous releases, we went to the expense of bringing Daniel Rey up from New York for the weekend to supervise the sessions.

Even stranger, after these sessions had sat in limbo for some length of time, Mark put forth to me the notion of having Kevin Mertens, our first singer who left the group after the first album way back in 1994, do the vocals on them. The idea was so out of left field to me...I was incredulous. I told him that, while I had nothing against Kevin or his vocal style or anything like that, it was just too weird...and unecessary. Mark was our vocalist and had been for the last five albums and well over ten years. To bring Kevin back at this point was just beyond bizarre."

Sickoids - No home

Long time no see. Trying to overcome some technical problems, as my external hard driver has been burnt off and i don't know if i can fix him (or how much money) i hadn't the best time lately. I won't start to grumble so let's focus. What i knew about sickoids was that they are a totally tough band and by tough i don't mean all that muscle pumped tough guy hardcore bands but the toughness you get from a raging bull on second before he demolishes his attack and their first LP was the proof. What i didn't know is that they feature members of Government Warning and Witch Hunt and they have a new 12'' out there released from Sorry State Records. To be honest i was waiting for the new Active Minds and the new Out Cold (yes, they have a brand new lp out...) Lps but "No Home" came in as a tornado. "Occupy your time" starts out with that crazy mid-tempo bass line and the drums start rolling over and then the vocals, and then you press repeat. Yep, the lenght of the album is twelve long minutes and yes this is a hardcore album. "Delusion" will be on my new mix comp before Partisan's 17years of hell, oh yeahhhhhhhh.

Born/Dead - Our darkest fears...

Back in 2007, a band from Canada called Ballast played in my city - a really crap band guys - but they had with them a huge distro where i picked up this tape without knowing shit about a band that really had a big impact on me. Born/Dead came from Bay Area, California and they were active from 2000 to 2008 if i'm not mistaken. This tape contains the "The darkest fears now haunt us" Lp and the "self titled" ep (also known as "24 hostages" ep) and was co-released from Prank records and Insane society records on cassette back in 2003 (almost 10 years ago). Their musical style could be described as a mix of of up-tempo hardcore punk with lots of elements from uk anarchopunk and early us crustcore. I remember when we wanted to describe fast political bands we were saying "they play like Aus-Rotten and Born/Dead". In this release the band has a more straight forward punk production (and playing) and not so crusty hardcore as their last lp "the final collapse". The first track "A look at the world" kicks in as a great intro for what is there to come, mid-paced and heavy just creates the atmosphere for two small dynamites "waiting" and "accuser", short sharp and blowing. "The last to starve" have all that you call great riffs and bridges while "indigent" is more likely my favorite Born/Dead song and the list can go on while the ep contains more ragers like "deadtime", "homeless" or "no one gets out alive". This shit is critical, dude

Cloud Rat - self titled LP

As you may know the fifth issue of the mighty Mountza fanzine released some days ago, and i was eager to start reading it. I have to say that i tend to be a fanatic of mr. George Skafidas majestic writing (ακόμα και αν είναι άλλος ένας αλήτης-ρουφιάνος-δημοσιογράφος) and the newest mountza is the perfect representation of Skafman's abilities. Beside his big text our Gogo hero did some interviews. Even if i love his writing i can't say that we share the same taste when it comes to da music. Considering his tight pants, or the algerian face with the big glasses, his love for political charged british hip-hop, screamo and emo tunes of the 90's etc i was keen on overtake his interviews.

So, as i was overtaking the pages i saw a shitty artwork of a band called Cloud Rat. I saw the name of interviewer G.S and thought "another some shitty pop-punk or garage or screamo band they'll propably be". But i started to read their interview and guess what, this one of the best interviews i've read recently, and way better than the stupid answers Midnight gave to Panos Asthma. Cloud Rat seems to be a band with a strong political background and that's always a big plus on my book. This record has great hardcore riffs and tones of blast beats and you can call it grindcore. This is maybe one of the best records i listened to recently and i challenge you to buy the mountza zine and read their answers while you listening their blasting tunes. And yep, the singer is female and she's nail it. Huge thanx to mr. G.Skaf....

Civic Progress // Formaldehyde Junkies // Quick Fix

Holy fuck, earlier yesterday i stunned when i saw Civic Progress demo's artwork on robert's blog and read those fucking words : hardcore punk. Yep, civic progress are hardcore, simple and genius. I downloaded the demo and i was "fuck, this shit is good" (είναι οτι καλυτερο μετα τους Limp Wrist και μάρτυς μου ο θεός αμέσως άρχισα την προπαγάνδα γι'αυτούς, πες Dbill) and the fucking basque cunt sent me the mail about em. CIVIC PROGRESS - two eps

there is a city in the US called St. Louis. i don/t know where the fuck this city is and i don/t care. but from this city there is a band called civic progress and the play hardcore. great raw, aggressive, tight and brutal hardcore. the demo and the first ep (petroleum man) is a call to the arms. when a ep starts with a song called KILL THE PRESIDENT, and the singer saying I WANNA KILL THE PRESIDENT, the you know that hardcore is still alive. that hardcore is not just 4 dudes playing music, but as well a riot. this record is one of the fucking best shit i listened in my life. middle 2000/s hardcore from the states kicking a lot of asses. if this band could be called like a horse, i would call it Total Fury...

FORMALDEHYDE JUNKIES - two eps

when i listen this band the first time i freaked out. after some years i still freak out when i listen to them. the seven inch from Formaldehyde Junkies (are a total wreck) is one of my favorite hardcore records ever made. this is one of these bands, where i don/t give a fuck if the guys are nice, wankers, straight, junkies, proles or retarded. they might arson my home, but after a gig of them and i wouldn't mind. this is kind of band playing such a spastic, frenetic and powerful hardcore that i really don/t mind if they puke all over my record collection. from all the bands in the US which started to play again old school hardcore punk the last years, this is definitely my favorite. not government warning, direct control, wasted time, social circkle... (all fantastic bandssss...) this is gg allin but on a hardcore punk way. and fuck it, that's great

QUICK FIX - 6 track ep (sweden)

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... six songs in 4 minutes and 30 seconds... THIS IS FUCKING HARDCORE!!!!!!!!! why to play long songs if you could smash your mind in 30 seconds hardcore punx assault. mix furious hardcore like modverat likvidation, crude ss and mob 47 with american hardcore from the 80/s like koro, deep wound, neon christ, wasted youth or ultra-fast shit live the neos (ok, they are from canada) and then kick it.... kick it fast and hard till it fucking breaks!!! sweden was in the 80/s a country where hardcore was made in a brutal way. in finnland they played crazy fantastic hardcore, but sweden was just brutal. the best shit from sweden since i don/t know if quick fix are from there, but this is one of the best hardcore hurricane storms if listened in my live. fast, tight, dirty and frenetic! one of the best bands i have listen to in fucking years...

Desperate Hours - The ironies of life continue 7''

Desperate hours hailing from Goleta, Ca and in their first 7'' released last year on Konton Crasher records they deliver four raging d-beat hardcore tracks. I buy this 7'' from the fellow skate punk bak mainly cause i liked so much the cover art. When i asked him what they are all about he told me that they sounding like DOOM. Hell yeah, Desperate Hours remind of Doom a lot but as you already note they are huge scandi freaks (don't forget to mention here that desperate hours is an Anti-Cimex song). These guys can easily described as an ass-kicking raw punk band not unlike those LA or NY bands whose fame come prior to their skills, bands like Cervix, Perdition, Mauser, Mata Mata, Kruel and the list can go on. A little bit of distortion, a little bit of raging d-beat, some scandi crust and some Doom and we have Desperate Hours. Buy this 7'', you won't be disappointed.

Fit for Abuse

Continuing the posts about fast old-school hardcore punk bands, and as nigro asked for this, here we have Fit For Abuse's discography as it has been posted ages ago on Dan's old-fast-and-loud blog. Fit For Abuse is an A-class punk band delivering the usual boston hardcore and by boston hardcore i do NOT mean Have Heart or stuff like that. I mean unstoppable and mean and pissed-off and many other type of negative things that you can use as an epithet for hardcore punk. This discography contains 37 tracks. Fit for abuse demo from 96 (it's the only release that's more punk with some sing-alongs but the rest tracks shreds) with an F.U's cover, followed by Psycho Ray demo, the track from Stab and Kill vol. 1, the tracks from the split with R'N'R on bridge9 records, the mindless violence 7'' on Crust records and an unreleased track from that session. One of the founding members (Muzzi) have been also in Out Cold for a couple of years.

Wake up this morning and a friend have sent me a mail. "Check this, it's John Evicci's new band". For those who don't know john Evicci is one of the founding members of Out Cold and the only member of the band with Mark Sheehan (rest in peace man) that were in Out Cold all the way, from the first day till the disbanding. Also, in Oblivionation plays John Kozik who has been a member of Out Cold from 1998 to 2001. So, what you have to except here. Raging, full of power and mind blowing hardcore fucking punk. I think words are useless, but this fucker gonna shake your head for good. Three tracks in six minutes. What else do you want?

Crude Thought

ones more a crude thought review. yesterday i wrote mike a review about this fantastic band from olympia (washington state) called Crude Thought. After writing him some shit i found a lot more about this band, sooo i must recover everything and start again. I don´t mind ´cause i discovered that they have TWO demos (i just knew the first) and since yesterday i have been enjoying the second one like a fucking puppet waiting for a new bone. the first time i listened to them it was back in athens, somewhere somehow in the internet. the demo was incredible fresh, brutal and fantastic. i have being listening to them a long time and sent the videos or the demo on youtube to countless friends. i am totally overthrown by all this new bands (ok, new is maybe exaggerated the last 3 - 4 years) in the US and Crude Thought is definitely one. actually their music is quite simple, it´s totally tense and frightening. in my opinion hardcore punk as it´s best. this band is crude, raw, tight, with great mid-tempo beats and as well a fucking noisy sound. their first demo was an incredible opening and the second demo i couldn't say that is better or worse, they have a darker sound (some songs remember me to siouxsie and the banshees but in a punk way) and they play some songs as well from the first demo and it sounds more evil. anyway a band that is absolutely great. simple drums like a warhead coming closer, a bass which is cutting wounds deeper and deeper in your skin and at last but not least the voice blasting your alienation out of your head. this makes it being like spending the last minutes of your live in a roller-coaster without safe-belts puking everyone in the face during the loopings. HAHAHAHA, what a great feeling. enjoy this unique band which created their own sound which is for every band something exceptional.

Hostage...

It was the other night while i was chilling with my friend bill on his apartment talking about our vacations, the rising of right wing in athens and europe and the struggle against, the hot girls that we never saw this summer, the mojito against sex on the beach cocktails, the nisiros against astipalaia islands, and a whole of other craps that can go passing by a punk's mind on an august afternoon. Then his roommate came in after his 8 hours daily grind on a shitty job. We said "hey, man" he spared a look at us, he went straight up to the turntable, picked up Wasted Time's "No shore" 7'' and he started to break his neck fast to the "Hostage" track (i have to say that we listened to side A three times straight). I can say that i loved their lp when it came out ("Fatherland" is THE track musically and lyrically) but i never pay attention to their seveninches (same thing with Government Warning, and their drummer plays also here) and two days now i'm listening only this masterpiece. I know that the majority of you, listeners, you already know how amazing this 7'' is (it came out 2007 through Grave Mistake records) but for all the nerds that passed down of your nose, give it a spin. Music judgers, bloggers and confectioners told me that they sound like Poison Idea, Negative approach and SSD.

Trauma - self titled lp

Get back to my beloved city of athens, oh man, it was ages, right? And with ages i don't mean paul ages , brother of Todd who destroys the drumkit on the latest Trauma album. Trauma is a hardcore punk band from Portland, Oregon and i remember when billy from crust-demos posted their demo back in 2010. back then i thought that these guys would like just to deliver top finnish (or scandi if you prefer) hardcore. Listening again their tracks i have to say that Trauma is the most close thing to Deathreat. Short, sharp, loud hardcore songs nearly over one minute per song. Billy from Deathreat, From ashes Rise, Tragedy is playing guitar and Todd from Tragedy, Deathreat, His hero is gone is playing the drums and some dude from Final Warning doing the vocals. Songs like "fall in line', "Soma" and "Fear us now" are truly unique - not that they re-inventing the wheel but - in a style of destructive, catchy and in your face punk with a touch of true threat floating around. I'm glad that the above mentioned Tragedy members can play first class punk (still..) and the latest tragedy album is just a bad parenthesis (or i hope....). Buy it wherever you see it. It really worths it.

Crime Wave - Savage Reaction

You have been drinking for hours, you driving the rubbish called car a night ride near by sea, you wear your favorite Midnight shirt and your tight pants, Motorhead delivers “On parole” and you wanna puke. Take a deep breath, throw Crime Wave cdr into your stereo and let it work. Here's just a brilliant three chord 12'' ep came out in 2010 from agrowax records (a great label, and Mike who runs it is the guitarist/vocalist of Janitor). Eight songs in less than 16 minutes and the lethal touch by No Talk, PMRC, Janitor and Sore Loser members offering the perfect soundtrack for a Monday morning bank robbery or a well planned stabbing on your boss throat. Some times I think that punk is just a metal chain on your hand and the ability of causing problems and Crime Wave flashes pics like that on my mind. Don't try to understand, just go with the flow “if you know what I mean”...

Out Cold - Lost Cause 7'' & split with No Side

I met borja a cold and rainy night in an ugly and dirty squat. Blitz were hitting the stereo with “Never Surrender” and I saw a guy with long sideburns and a Wretched tattoo and I told him : “Are you the friend of Roberto, from barcelona?” and he answered me “yes, but i'm from bilbao. You have to listen to the Mau Maus”. I never listened to Mau Maus but I really appreciate Borja and all his crazy talking about free sex and riots. This and the next post will bring you some unpleasant feelings. Borja created a great post about Out Cold and d-bill will continue on the Out Cold topic. First off all, once upon a time I met Mike. In Athens there are not so many anarchists who listen hardcore in such an obsessed way some of us do. Anyway it came out that both of us love Out Cold. Soo he told me to write something about them /cause he is bored writing all the time most of the things on his blog by himself. I still remember the first time I heard Out Cold. It was in a radio show of a friend of mine. Since then, a couple of years already, I've been looking for every single song of this band. I still find here an there sometimes records I never listen. For me this band is very special, because they played hardcore in a time where no one gave a fucking attention on it. Now hardcore (played in the way of the 80/s) is being played more and more, but sadly the singer of Out Cold is dead. Thank you Mark for this amazing emotions I get when I listen to this amazing band. But anyway, now I wanna write about two of their seven inches which are in my opinion fucking amazing. Ok, all their records are fucking brutal. No fucking way of ignoring this band. If you do it's because you fucking like shit like Ekkaia and your're EMO!!!

Lost Cause 7inch 1994

When a band starts a record with a song called Lost cause, then you know you're listening the right shit. Everything is perfect, the voice like always, hate pure, it's aggressive and I wanna kick the shit out of someone.  The fucking solos of the guitar, in almost every song, punk rock as it is. The drummer hits fast and slow, always beating, not playing. This record is sooo fucking brilliant that I really don't know what to say. You can't describe things like this. My brain is boiling, I wanna go now out of this flat and smash everything with my head. On the B-side Fantasy won't stand is the first song and it has a slow intro which let you predict nothing good for everyone. Fuckhead is a slower song but not different from every single other song. You wanna scream to everyones face this: FUCKHEAD!!! And finishing this masterpiece of hardcore. Like an animal… I definitely feel like an animal with this and specially after it…really listen to this, buy it, steal it from your best friends, download this whatever… If you don't like it you are a fucking idiot and i'll find you…

Split with No Side 7inch 1999

Starting with No Side from Japan, this band sounds the way Japanese hardcore is. No fucking solos, no fucking Burning Spirit. Like Gauze, but more dirty, more distorted but without becoming noisy. This band reminds me a lot to bands like NK6. It is direct, straight and tight. When you listen to this you hate your friends. Imagine what you'll do with cops and fascists afterwards… And now Out Cold, I have to say one thing first off all. All their songs are fucking brilliant. But the result is always different because of the recording. One of their best seven inches is Planned Accident, because the sound is incredible brutal. Out Cold never played very different but their sounds change on the records and make them be better or not. Here again, a bunch of crazy volunteers ready to jump in a black hole without thinking about the consequences. This sound is simple but great. The voice like always, but the rest of the components play a fucking brutal way of how you can play hardcore. Like a chainsaw. And if you interfere you'll lose your head and this is what you should want when you listen to Out Cold.

Tragedy - 2012 - Darker days ahead

The time you've been waiting has finally come. Tragedy just released their new full length lp and I think it's the right time for a review. So the new album kicks in with the song “No cemeteries here” that more or less is a let down. Every single tragedy record starts with a dynamite. The self titled had the “point of no return”, Vengeance had “conflicting ideas” and Nerve damage had “eyes of madness”. A mid-tempo (as the majority of the album tracks) song that bets more on the guitar's harpist than the urge and rage the tragedy's song occasionally offers. “close at hand” continues were “no cemeteries” just started. Mid-tempo and a bit boring without a glimpse of d-beat. “the grim infinite” it's the first powerful track that really can nail you alongside “Wail of sirens”, “Darker days ahead” and my favorite “Power fades” with the great double vocals that really try to sing instead of just yelling. Four good songs outta nine isn't the best score i guess. I have to say that I wasn't so fulfilled with what I listened here. Too much Amebix influences, maybe a lit bit Killing Joke and (as a Portland based bro told me) the todd's latest obsession with black metal and Pink Floyd. I think that the band lost their ability to create violent and menacing environments. This album unfortunately doesn't “bite”, it doesn't “catch you from the neck”. I like the progression and evolution and finally the new road the band chosen to walk and I wish for a more raging album in the next few years. Notice : I will definitely buy the album because I think Tragedy is more or less a classical band and their big plus is always the lyrics. Support the band, support the underground and as my friend asthma told me “I respect the bands that play what THEY want to play and not what their FANS want them to PLAY. I don’t get why so much criticism against TRAGEDY. They did enough good albums that will for ever stand the time. Get instruments and produce better music. Let the bands breath for once! Nobody has to like TRAGEDY FOR EVER”.

Replica - Demo 2012

Replica :

1. A copy or reproduction of a work of art, especially one made by the original artist.
2. A copy or reproduction, especially one on a scale smaller than the original.

What is replica? Surely not, a copy of any reproduction on planet earth. Replica is by far the most intense, provocative and raw hardcore punk band i've listened to lately. According to the internet webzines and blog the bands stands somewhere between Harum-scarum and Talk is poison. The truth is that if I had a band I would like to kick-off with a rager like “Sycophant” and I would like to scream “You can't stop the weather”. I would also like to sing 3 choruses and 1 refrain in 40 seconds and jump above frightened people with my shoes upside down. I don't know if Dharma can do that but I know that only few people can laugh with such courage and power as she does (on “Sandy bottoms').  I don't know if you care but they come from Bay area and they are also involved with No Statik (what a fuckin great band), Infect, Bad Blood, Duck and Cover. This demo along with Stripmines latest album is the reason why hardcore is and always be so refreshing and mind-blowing. Period. For all of you that missed Robert's post about REPLICA here ya go...
